Today is October 21st, 2015. Here are the past events of importance to Indigenous American history:
1837 - During the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), under a flag of
truce during peace talks, U.S. troops under Gen. Thomas S. Jesup
(1788-1860) sieged the Indian Seminole Chief Osceola in Florida and sent
to a jail in North Carolina, where he later died. Jesup's trickery
outraged the American public.
1867 - Many leaders of the Kiowa,
Comanche and Kiowa-Apache signed a peace treaty at Medicine Lodge, Kan.
Comanche Chief Quanah Parker refused to accept the treaty terms.
1996 - Executive Order on Tribal Colleges and Universities - President
Clinton authorized a White House Initiative on Tribal Colleges and
Universities within the US Department of Education to continue the
support and development of tribal colleges into the 21st Century.
